Sometimes you need to take a step back and look at what’s making you smile or feel happy. In the hopes that it’ll make you think of the good things in your own life, I thought I’d get a little self-indulgent and share 7 reasons I smiled this winter.
Toques in hot tubs.
Hot tubbing is great. Hot tubbing in the dead of winter feels deliciously rebellious. But hot tubbing in weather so cold that the only way to do it without losing your ears to frostbite along the way is by wearing a toque is hilarious.
Quiet board game nights.
I love my friends because we’re all a bunch of nerds who love playing cards and board games. It keeps me on my toes because I’m not very good and it keeps us off our smartphones for an hour or two.
All the socks.
My sock collection is a roller coaster ride. I go through them quickly because of my line of work. My most recent additions feature donuts, animal faces, and aliens. Because why not?!
Sunshine that makes even the coldest days bearable.
Sure, its freakishly cold in Saskatchewan, but if you give me sunshine on a -30 day, I will still feel hopeful about surviving it! There’s nothing quite like a clear blue sky that stretches forever and the sun beaming down on crystal white snow.
Plain old chai and chai lattes.
My friend’s mom makes the best chai (shout out to you-know-who!). I also love getting me some chai latte from Starbucks every now and then for a cozy afternoon. Which brings me to…
Afternoons spent lurking at coffee shops.
Maybe it’s cliched for all of us to be doing work at coffee shops, but it’s a cliché because it works, right? It’s warm, it’s got a buzzy atmosphere that keeps you energized, there are interesting people to watch if you need a break, and delicious drinks and snacks to keep you going!
Working to maintain balance and (mostly) succeeding.
This time last year I was not in the best place due to a large amount of stress, so I’ve been working really hard this season to maintain balance and not over-commit myself in order to prevent that. I’m doing a pretty good job, if I do say so myself! Saying no has been a difficult lesson for me to learn – to me, it feels silly to say no to things for the sake of my doing nothing, but I’m slowly learning it’s definitely worth doing every once in a while!
Looking back on the past week or month or season, what has made you smile lately?
