It’s mid-January. Christmas is a distant memory. The lights that lit up the night are gone. The wind is biting cold. Our backs are breaking from all the shoveling. Our dignity is breaking from looking like goofballs every time we slip on ice and try to defy the inevitable fall. Spirits are low. It’s mid-winter. There is no end in sight.
There are good parts of winter, too, friends!
We gotta bring our good attitudes back to 2019 (see what post I’m referring to here) and think about why winter rocks!
Guys, skating and sledding are way too much fun and way too magical for winter to ever be completely terrible. As long as you’ve got these sports, winter rocks. Just picture a sunny day where you’re gliding along gracefully and watching the world go by, or you’re zooming down the hill at top speed and feeling your adrenaline rise up up up as you ride down down down.
As much as I try to do it, drinking hot chocolate in the summer just isn’t the same as when it’s winter and you’ve got your favourite mug and you’re cozied up in big socks and a quilt and you’re just so grateful you’re nice and warm when it’s so cold outside. Magic.
Remember when you were a kid and you would open your mouth up to the sky and catch snowflakes on your tongue? And then you’d watch your friends and see if you could make out the shape of the snowflakes on their tongue? It was a race before it melted and a wonder to see those crystal shapes.
Speaking of crystal shapes, hoar frost is AMAZING. It lights up the world, adds texture to everything, and truly creates a winter wonderland. We had a week of hoar frost earlier this year (so unusual!) and it was absolutely beautiful!
Fireplaces, blankets, and big socks!
Yes, yes, and yes! The hygge fad happened for a reason, folks! Because being cozy is the best and is something we should strive to be all year round. But it just makes special sense during winter, and it feels extra good.
That satisfying crunching sound!
If you’ve ever experienced winter, you know exactly what I’m talking about. If you haven’t had the opportunity, I’ll explain. You know how you hear your clip clopping feet as you walk down the sidewalk? Now replace that clip clop sound with a crunch from when your feet sink even just an inch into snow. Again, winter magic.
That chill stillness…
The air is different in winter. It’s cold and dry, and on days where there’s no wind, it leaves the world feeling like a white canvas, waiting, hibernating. I love the stillness of winter. It’s calm and peaceful.
The summer anticipation!
As much as I love winter, I love summer, too! And without winter, you don’t recognize just how much you miss summer and you get to go through that anticipation of its arrival! “Oh, it’s above freezing today, is spring on its way?” “Oh, it’s May, warm weather is coming!” You can’t truly appreciate the warmth of summer without knowing the cold of winter.
Okay, team, to get you through the rest of this winter, remind yourself of these reasons why winter rocks! Truly, life is better when you just try to find the good, and there is plenty of good in winter.
