Performing in musicals and dance performances that run for multiple nights are a big part of my life. Having just finished one of those runs, I thought it might be an appropriate time to take you on a journey through the whole process – from auditions to closing night.
You’re nervous, stressing out, and all the while trying to look like the coolest cat in the room. Your acting skills are really put to the test here as you pretend to be confident while your insides feel like jelly.
First read through
You are so pumped you made it here! Everything in life is good. There are optimistic and innocent smiles around the table. This production is going to be great! What could go wrong?
Having so much fun! You’re making friends, falling in love with the show and your character, and growing as a performer. Things are busy, but you’re happy to be doing what you love.
Off book rehearsal
Oh crap oh crap oh crap, line please!!
It’s so late. This is a gong show. What is happening? Why are we still standing here? Can I please go to bed?
One of two things is happening here. It’s either:
This show is going to be terrible! We are so not prepared! Or
This show is going to be amazing!
Oh crap oh crap oh crap. There are people out there ready to judge me. Would it be so terrible if I just went out the back door and disappeared into the night?
Lights come up
Everything falls into place and you realise that this spot on stage with those lights shining on your face and all those people watching, this is where you’re meant to be.
During the show
You’re a star! This is so much fun! Minor catastrophes may occur, but nothing we can’t handle! We’re unstoppable!
Beaming with pride and joy for you and your friends and all the work you’ve put into this amazing thing called theatre.
End of closing night
Tears and sadness that are totally unnecessary because you all know you’re going to perform with each other again some time in the future but you’re so tired and high on joy that everything is dramatic and a big deal and, yes, you know you should calm down, but wasn’t that amazing and can’t it go longer?!
The next morning
Well, what do I do with all this free time??? Oh, hey, there are auditions for another show soon!
Who has experienced this beautiful journey? What did I miss that you think should have made the list?
