I was at a murder mystery party a while back (I know, I’m super cool!) and the theme was the wild west. I gussied myself up in this beautiful dress that had been made specifically for me for a show I was in, found some lace wrist-length gloves, curled my hair, put on some blush, grabbed my white lace parasol and headed to this party, ready to be the southern belle of the ball.
Seriously, guys, murder mysteries are so much fun. Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it. My favourite part is getting to dress up in these crazy costumes.
Now, as a twenty-something living in the age of social media, I really wanted to show off my costume to the world. I wanted everyone to know how awesome I looked and how much fun I was having. But it was a busy night. I was talking to my friends, and I was trying to solve a murder. You know, the usual stuff.
I never got that photo. Dun dun DUNNNN.
At one point in the evening, though, I stopped and asked myself, “Why are you stressing about this so much?”
Why, indeed, Self?
So many of us have this urge to prove to the strangers in our lives that we have it all – that we’re socially active all the time, that we eat super healthy food every day, that everything in our lives is sunshine and rainbows.
That sounds crazy exhausting to me. And anyways, what was I afraid would happen if I didn’t post an Instagram photo of me looking super fine? That hundreds of people wouldn’t know I went to this party? NO, THE HUMANITY!
I mean, what was I afraid would happen? That hundreds of people wouldn’t know I went to this party? Who cares? I know I went, I know I had fun, I know that I enjoyed spending time with my friends, and I know I rocked my costume. Seriously, I won Best Costume. Did I mention I curled my hair for it? That’s a big deal.
We need to stop stressing so much about proving to hundreds of people just how “happy” we are, and do more of just being happy. I’m not saying stop posting awesome stuff because I love seeing awesome stuff! Just don’t let it take away from your actual happiness.
That’s all for now. See you, friends! Keep smiling!
