You’re sitting at your computer. That blank document is staring at you. The flashing cursor is waiting patiently for your first move. And you just don’t feel like writing.
I’ve been there. Whether it’s because I’m feeling brain-dead, or I don’t know what to say, I’ve sat at my laptop and though to myself, “I just don’t feel like writing.”

When you know that the writing isn’t happening in this moment, what can you do instead?
There’s always the option of just forcing yourself to get through it. Sometimes it works. Whether the entire writing session is a slog, or you eventually find your mojo and the words start flowing again. I have a friend who always gives a task a solid half-hour try before giving up on it. Maybe that’s all you need to get back in the writing mood.
Do something else writing-related.
This could be editing, brainstorming, scheduling, creating characters, world-building, etc. You’re still working on your writing even though you’re not writing.
Do a crossword or sudoku.
Maybe your brain just needs to get warmed up. Try doing a puzzle that you enjoy that will get your brain revved and ready to go. It’ll be a good distraction from whatever it is you’re trying to write about, which might be the productive break you need.
Read a book.
You’ll still be honing in on your craft by reading good writing and you might be inspired to work on your own!

Your brain really might need a break, so get your body to do the work instead. You decide if it needs to be a full sweat session or just a quick walk around the block. I’m a big fan of whipping out 20 jumping jacks in my living room.
Sometimes I feel so refreshed and re-focussed after mediating. Finding that stillness for your mind might be just the break you need in order to rest up for that writing session.
Think about what life would be like without writing.
Maybe you gotta play the gratitude game. What would life be like without writing? Would you feel unfulfilled? Would you feel lost? How glad are you to have writing in your life? Now doesn’t that feel better?
It’s okay to not feel like writing. I’m feeling it even as I write this blog post all about it! (I went with the plough through it option.) All we can do is try our best to keep ourselves energized for writing and try to work around our obstacles to the best of our ability.
What do you do when you don’t feel like writing?
Enjoy the journey!
