Beneath the stars, the fire our only source of light and warmth in that dark night, a group of 20-somethings are gathered in a circle, sharing our hopes and dreams and insecurities.
Looking around at my friends, most of whom I’ve known for around seven years (some longer), I realize that we’re all on such different paths, even though we all came from very similar places.
We were all university students.
Now one has a full-time job and owns his own home.
One is balancing two part-time jobs and an entrepreneurial venture.
Two got laid off.
One has a Master’s that has nothing to do with his Bachelor’s.
One has an Arts degree and no intention of upgrading.
A couple more are in school.
Most of us live in our parents’ basements.
Two are engaged.
Two are single.
Two have multiple paths and don’t know which to pick.
One just bought her first car.
One has plans to be a millionaire.
A few others just want quiet, simple, happy lives.
Some can’t see that far into their future, yet.
Even though we’re all in such different places in our lives, on our planned and unplanned paths, we still gather around the same fire, beneath the same stars and share the same memories, the same interests, and the same hopes. The comparison game is irrelevant here. It’s just life-long friends all wanting to support and love one another.
Don’t get caught in the comparison trap! You just do you.
