We’re nearly halfway through December. We’ve just finished experiencing all of the 12 Days of Christmas giveaways all over the internet. Christmas trees are up, carols are playing on the radio, we’re panicking over Christmas shopping. We are in full-on Holiday Mode. Capital H, capital M.
I love the Christmas season. It reminds me of my childhood and of the important things in life—family, friendship, joy, generosity, good eating. Okay, the glutton within me took over a little bit for that last one, but you get the idea.
These days, Christmas means taking the time to binge-visit with everyone that has touched my life within two weeks. In today’s world of multi-tasking and over-scheduling and rushing from one appointment to the next, that’s a pretty wonderful thing.
This Christmas I get to look forward to three family Christmas dinners (two sides of my own family and one with my SO’s family), a potluck among my friends (a tradition that started in our second year of university four years ago), two more Christmas parties with two other friend groups, two birthday brunches and a couple New Year’s parties. Yikes, looking at this list, I’m realising that’s a bit much. But it just goes to show how lucky I am to have so many wonderful people in my life.
That’s what Christmas is to me, now. Recognising all the family and friends I have that are willing to see me during this crazy season. There are times when I don’t see these people for months at a time because life happens. But at Christmastime, I get bulldozed over by all the love that I have for these people and the love they have for me.
I hope you all get to experience the same love and happiness that I get to during this time. Take a moment to recognise how wonderful it is to be able to spend the holidays with the people who count in your life. And good luck getting through all those work parties, dinners, Secret Santas, etc. without exploding from eating too much stuffing and chocolate!
