What is positive living? What does it mean to live a positive life? Is it all about yourself or about your place in the world? What does it take to live a positive life? Can anybody do it?
See Heather Smile has been a blog about positive and creative living for a while now, and I thought it was time to clarify what positive living actually means to me.
What is positive living?
Positive living is about the impact you have on the world. It’s about your legacy. Do you want to leave behind a legacy that makes people smile and makes the world a better place? If so, positive living is for you.
How do you leave a positive living legacy everywhere you go?
You live with kindness and compassion. You make people feel good. You laugh. You encourage others to try to be their best selves. You do good work for whatever you believe in. You remind people what it is to live and laugh and love.
Can anybody make a difference?
Yes! I think there are people who are more disposed towards living a positive life and leaving that legacy than others, but everybody has the ability to make a difference for the better in their small way. That’s because there is no one way to leave a little positivity.
What does positive living look like?
It’s you telling your family and friends you love them.
It’s showing up for the people you love.
It’s holding the door open for the person behind you.
It’s giving your bus seat to the elderly.
It’s showing compassion for people you disagree with.
It’s trying to understand all sides of a story.
It’s living by your morals and your values.
It’s choosing to do the hard work.
It’s knowing when to work and when to play.
It’s sharing big and little moments.
It’s noticing the little things in life.
There are so many ways we can make a positive difference. We can make the world better by being activists for the environment, for refugees and immigrants, for child soldiers, or veterans. And we can make it better by building a strong healthy family that can share love, by making our neighbours feel safe, and by letting our friends know we see them and are there for them.
Big and small, all these actions are the result of positive living.
Where do I start?
You start with yourself.
Firstly, you look after your personal health and well-being. How can you be expected to spread positivity when you’re stressed, sick, or struggling in some other way?
Nest, decide for yourself that you want to leave behind a legacy of positivity and decide what that decision will call from you – intellectually, emotionally, and physically.
Figure out your morals and values. How do they play into real life? What do they look like in the grander scheme of things? How do they make a difference?
Enjoy life. I had someone say to me that my Instagram feed was all about “finding the goodness in life”. Do that. Find the goodness. Find the joy. Find the fun. Find the love and the adventure and the lessons and the failures and the challenges. Stop to look at butterflies and watch the clouds and smell the air and take stock of the gifts you have.
Live your life with grace and openness. And then you’ll start leaving behind a legacy of positive living.
