Sometimes you just need to sit down for a solid two hours and get some real work done. And sometimes it’s really hard to find the focus and motivation to do that. Sometimes I need a little help.
One of my most important tools for getting work done is YouTube.
Wait, I don’t mean I sit around watching cat videos all day long. I use YouTube to find music that will provide some solid background noise and keep my focus away from all the distractions the world has to offer.
If you’re in need of a little help to stay focused and productive, here are 4 things I listen to when I’m working.
Video game and movie scores
Hans Zimmer for the win. Particularly with the Sherlock Holmes scores. I could listen to those all day long. But I’m also a fan of listening to the Harry Potter 5 and 6 scores, A Series of Unfortunate Events, Assassin’s Creed, and Super Mario Galaxy.
There’s something about classical music that just sounds so tidy and purposeful. It sets a great tone for being productive and focused. I’m a big fan of Beethoven – I actually have an album of 99 of his greatest pieces.
Other instrumental music
You may have noticed a theme here – lyric-less songs are amazing for getting your stuff done. There isn’t any language distracting you from your reading or thoughts, but there is something that remains constant in the background, acting as white noise.
This category is for the artists who make instrumental music for the sake of instrumental music. I’m thinking of Dustin O’Halloran (piano), Belle Orchestre (pretty experimental), and ODESZA (I know they don’t do just instrumental, but their album does the trick).
La Belle Mixtape
This is a YouTube channel that takes popular songs and mixes them into one long never-ending song and it is AMAZING. I stumbled upon it maybe three years ago, probably because it was suggested for me and the picture looked cool, so I guess those creepy algorithms are good for something, right? More often than not, these playlists put me into a really great mood while making me super productive. Time just flies by while I’m working/jamming to it! My favourite is the first one I came across – Summer Memories. Yeah, it’s so good that I’m linking you to it.
If you have any other suggestions for music (or maybe not music??) to listen to while working, let me know by commenting below!
